See now, it wouldn't be the history teacher for me but geography. Like the sentiment though. I had Christmas pudding for breakfast and the day just got better from there... ;)

So, next year I am going to try and visit/meet/catch up with everyone on my LJ friends list. Which will be interesting since some of you are just down the road and some of you I have never met and you are on different continents.

This is your chance to opt out. If you would rather I didn't turn up on your doorstep/in your town please feel free to say so now. I won't take offence. It might save me airfare... ;)

Opt outs/Hell yeahs as comments please.

World's Strongest Man - I'm Addicted [Dec. 14th, 2007|08:22 pm]
I am reasonably smart and I go for smart guys. And yet. I spent the last ten years of my life heavily lusting after Svend Karlson before transferring my affections to the hot new thing. But Svend always will have a place in my heart. Viking Power and all that. Now though, I lust after Marius Pudzianowski. Indeed I have delayed going out because I *have* to watch the World's Strongest Man qualifier. I love World's Strongest Man and watch it every year.

I swear I like guys in suits more but something about this just makes me very breathless:

If I claim it's his eyes, would you believe me?

[Oct. 20th, 2007|08:03 pm]
[Feeling | content]

Last weekend then was spent being literary at the Ilkley Literature Festival. This weekend is being spent being theatrical. :)

Last night I went to see Don Quixote at the West Yorkshire Playhouse with a bunch of the bookcrossers. It was very interesting: a bizarre set of costumes, a talented cast, a video wall that showed footage of Barcelona's streets alternating with seascapes. There was singing of mid-nineties anthems and a oracle that made predictions from a Coca Cola vending machine. There was swordfighting. It was good but not very fulfilling. I have read DQ and it is logical that the ultimate slacker/timewaster/lifeoptout book would make an ultimately unfulfilling timewaster play, a good one but still.

This afternoon I went back to the WYP with different company and after a rib sticking lunch in The Wardrobe (I can very highly recommend their chocolate fondant!) we saw Stockholm. Today was the last day it was on but I am so glad that I dragged myself out to see it - it's the best original thing I have seen at the theatre in years.

The blurb from the leaflet: 'He is her world. She is his night and day. They love each other to bits. Meet the couple that every couple want to be. Attractive and immaculately turned out, they appear the perfect team. Tomorrow they will be in Stockholm, a city where, in summer, the sun shines 24/7 and sometimes it's dark all day long. Treading a fine line between tenderness and cruelty, Stockholm reveals a relationship unravelling. It’s beautiful, but it’s not pretty.'

The blurb doesn't even touch how funny, poignant and just downright spot on this was. This couple are going to Stockholm but are living with some freaky Stockholm Syndrome emotions, bubbling under the surface of what seems to be the perfect relationship. If you've ever been in a destructive relationship you'll recognise a lot of the scenarios and nod at some of the lines used. The two actors held us spellbound for 80 minutes, except when we were laughing at the witticisms... this also has one of the most oddball blowjob scenes in it you'll ever see (upside down on the stairs, while he describes the tiles used to decorate the hall and she speaks Swedish). There is dancing, cooking and fighting. Seriously, seriously good, I will never be able to see an unwanted letter or fennel without laughing as I remember this play, if you get a chance to see it do.

After the play there were caipirinhas in the Brazillian place by the Corn Exchange (one of my favourite lazy weekend afternoon haunts) and pizza in the new upmarket pizza joint (Croma) over on Park Row which I have to confess seems a bit style over substance but it's nice enough. Now home and sleepy after only managing to get a couple of hours sleep last night, I am too sleepy for Wendyhouse or the pub so I am listening to The Weekender and enjoying a lazy glass of red wine. I feel very broadsheetreader-ish. :)

Belgium [Jun. 29th, 2007|10:11 am]
[Current Location |Living Room, nose pressed to the window to spot my mate]
[Feeling | Slightly sleepy still]
[Current Soundtrack |Superman Lovers - Starlight]

Having read two books about intentional communities, Belgium shared a lot of the communities traits. All that bicycle sharing. Taxis which aren't marked up in any way as you hire the driver and his car and get to know about different taxis by word of mouth. All the shops in Herentals having stalls outside selling the most popular stuff as well as the regular shop selling everything. Double-decker trains where people in 1st class with 2nd class tickets get moved to the next carriage (despite the 1st class carriage only having about 3 people in it) and saying thank you to the ticket woman... its very surreal.

The trains across Belgium were fine in the end and the stations/connections easy to figure out. Just tiring. The Hotel De Zalm was neat, nothing fancy but in the main square across from the Clothmakers Hall (prettier in the evening sunshine) and the bar downstairs in the hotel served fantastically cheap, good red wine and excellent food (including fresh, just cooked bread). Which is exactly what I want at the end of a long day of glorified commuting. Herentals is only a little place but if you like food/cooking/kitchen gadgets there's a couple of shops that can be perused with a glinty eye. I came back with a cute mini frying pan which cooks things in a heart shape. It's really excessively cute. Also found rhubarb conserve, various brandysnap type biscuits and stuffed peppers and spinach pasta from an Italian deli place. I didn't actually buy any chocolate or beer which must make me a rarity out there.

Work was as expected, slightly tricky and a few moments calling for diplomacy but I am on holiday so it can wait till next week before I think about it again.

Now, can I recommend flying out to Brussels with BMI from Leeds Bradford if you manage to get the company to stump up for the ScotAirways/BMI flight? Expensive yes but. Fast track through all the security checks, luggage tagged as priority for unloading, flying on one of these:

Which is a fantastic plane to find yourself on when you had been resigned to a generic carrier. It seats less than 30 passengers on the seating layout they're using. Sitting in the seat next to the emergency exit on this actually did involve being asked if I was prepared/able to open the exit in the event of an emergency... Oh and the view from the window on landing was 'kin A. On top of this there was good food, a free Independent and free red wine. Made me wish the flight was longer. :)

I'm packed with all the books for the Unconvention and just waiting for my mate who's giving me a lift to the train station, then I am off to Brighton.

Have just found the most striking quote in this book I am reading, Utopian Dream, which is all about intentional communities and what makes them succeed or fail.

'We have to love our neighbour because he is there - a much more alarming reason for a much more serious operation. He is the sample of humanity which is actually given us. Precisely because he may be anybody, he is everybody. He is a symbol because he is an accident.' (Chesterton, in his book Heresy)

Right, now I have to eat and sleep because I am getting up again at 06:30. Night all. See some of you soon, ::virtual tickles to the rest of ya::

[Current Soundtrack |Amy Winehouse - Back To Black]

So, I am back again from Barcelona. I have a stack of new development requests from the client, new training documents to create and a support queue to plough through but things are good and all went well. I got my new works mobile before I went and have successfully mastered a)turning the ring tone to vibrate b)putting call divert on and c)changing my theme to a cute bouncing snake... it's nice to have a toy to play with while stood in airport queues. :)

Barcelona was great and buzzy. Went to this amazing pan-Asian restaurant that kept feeding random bits of things to me and only charged me for the meal I ordered (will write about all the new things I tried on my cooking journal). Had an excellent time mooching oddball shops selling art and tourist tat down at the touristy end of town. I love the fact the shops stay open till 21:00. Got to walk around Park Güell which was designed by Gaudi, it has amazing mosaics and a dragon fountain that is really striking... I couldn't make up my mind whether I liked it. See what you think:

Nightmarish flight back with lots of turbulence and screaming/puking brats followed by the bardo of baggage reclaim. Urgh. Made up for though by my best mate meeting my flight and bearhugging me. :)

Right it's Friday morning and there's a management meeting. That means there's a bacon sandwich order going in. I think it's time to let my anti-junk food stance take a slide, I'm starving.

ICE - Simple but effective [Jul. 8th, 2005|04:08 pm]
[Feeling | thoughtful]

The Vodafone Life Savers Awards – which honour men and women who have saved a life in extraordinary circumstances - are launched today with a campaign to urge everyone in Britain to store next of kin details in their mobile phones.

By entering the letters ICE – ‘In Case of Emergency’ – into the mobile’s phone book, users can log the name and number of someone who should be contacted in an emergency.

The idea, developed by the East Anglian Ambulance Trust, and backed by Vodafone, follows research that shows a staggering eight out of 10 of us fail to carry any details of who we would like telephoned following a serious accident.

Vodafone spokesperson, Ally Stevens, said : “The Life Savers Awards already demonstrate, through practical example, the important role a mobile phone can play when minutes matter in an emergency.

“By adopting the ICE advice, your mobile will now also help the rescue services quickly contact a friend or relative – which could be vital in a life or death situation.”

Email thievery - no it probably isn't genuine but what the hell [Mar. 18th, 2005|02:21 pm]
[Feeling | amused]

The questions below about Australia, are from potential visitors. They were posted on an Australian Tourism Website and the answers are the actual responses by the website officials, who obviously have a sense of humour.

> Q: Does it ever get windy in Australia? I have never seen it rain on TV, how do the plants grow? (UK).
> A: We import all plants fully grown and then just sit around watching them die.

> Q: Will I be able to see kangaroos in the street? (USA)
> A: Depends how much you've been drinking.

> Q: I want to walk from Perth to Sydney - can I follow the railroad tracks? (Sweden)
> A: Sure, it's only three thousand miles, take lots of water.

> Q: Is it safe to run around in the bushes in Australia? (Sweden)
> A: So it's true what they say about Swedes.

> Q: Are there any ATMs (cash machines) in Australia? Can you send me a list of them in Brisbane, Cairns, Townsville and Hervey Bay? (UK)
> A: What did your last slave die of?

> Q: Can you give me some information about hippo racing in Australia? (USA)
> A: A-fri-ca is the big triangle shaped continent south of Europe. Aus-tra-lia is that big island in the middle of the Pacific which does not... oh forget it. Sure, the hippo racing is every Tuesday night in Kings Cross. Come naked.

> Q: Which direction is North in Australia? (USA)
> A: Face south and then turn 180 degrees. Contact us when you get here and we'll send the rest of the directions.

> Q: Can I bring cutlery into Australia? (UK)
> A: Why? Just use your fingers like we do.

> Q: Can you send me the Vienna Boys' Choir schedule? (USA)
> A: Aus-tri-a is that quaint little country bordering Ger-man-y, which is...oh forget it. Sure, the Vienna Boys Choir plays every Tuesday night in Kings Cross, straight after the hippo races. Come naked.

> Q: Can I wear high heels in Australia? ( UK)
> A: You are a British politician, right?

> Q: Are there supermarkets in Sydney and is milk available all year round? (Germany)
> A: No, we are a peaceful civilization of vegan hunter/gatherers. Milk is illegal.

> Q: Please send a list of all doctors in Australia who can dispense rattlesnake serum. (USA)
> A: Rattlesnakes live in A-meri-ca which is where YOU come from. All Australian snakes are perfectly harmless, can be safely handled and
make good pets.

> Q: I have a question about a famous animal in Australia, but I forget its name. It's a kind of bear and lives in trees. (USA)
> A: It's called a Drop Bear. They are so called because they drop out of Gum trees and eat the brains of anyone walking underneath them. You can scare them off by spraying yourself with human urine before you go out walking.

> Q: Do you have perfume in Australia? (France)
> A: No, WE don't stink.

> Q: I have developed a new product that is the fountain of youth. Can you tell me where I can sell it in Australia? (USA)

> Q: Can you tell me the regions in Tasmania where the female population is smaller than the male population? (Italy)
> A: Yes, gay nightclubs.

> Q: Do you celebrate Christmas in Australia? (France)
> A: Only at Christmas.

> Q: I was in Australia in 1969 on R+R, and I want to contact the girl I dated while I was staying in Kings Cross. Can you help? (USA)
> A: Yes, and you will still have to pay her by the hour.

> Q: Will I be able to speak English most places I go? (USA)
> A: Yes, but you'll have to learn it first.

Inspired by free_pancho I took this quiz.

You Are a Hunter Soul

You are driven and ambitious - totally self motiviated to succeed
Actively working to acheive what you want, you are skillful in many areas.
You are a natural predator with strong instincts ... and more than a little demanding.
You are creative, energetic, and an extremely powerful force.

An outdoors person, you like animals and relate to them better than people.
You tend to have an explosive personality, but also a good sense of humor.
People sometimes see you as arrogant or a know it all.
You tend to be a bit of a loner, though you hate to be alone.

Souls you are most compatible with: Seeker Soul and Peacemaker Soul

I didn't fiddle the answers but it does seem cosmic in its irony. I'd actually consider myself more a Traveler Soul or Dreamer but what do I know? :)
